Dynamics and spectroscopy of optically trapped microparticles Antonio Sasso

The seminar will consist into two parts. In the first part it will discuss the use of optical
tweezers to study at mesoscopic scales the mechanical behavior of several class of soft
materials, including biological samples (microrheology). The second part will be focused
on several spectroscopic techniques and their use in the study of single particle or cells.
It will shown how Raman spectroscopy can be combined with optical tweezers and how
the low efficiency of the Raman yield can be overcame thanks to single molecule sensitive
techniques based on localized surface plasmon resonances (Surface-Enhanced Raman
Scattering , SERS).
